This book talk explores the achievements and limitations of microsurgery in treating patients with cancer and traumatic injuries, drawing on deeply personal perspectives from both sides of the operating table—the patient and the surgeon.

From the patient’s perspective, Dr. Deleyiannis examines quality of life, recovery, and the remarkable ways some patients exceed even the most optimistic expectations. The discussion goes beyond surgical outcomes to consider what recovery means for patients as they return to their families, work, and everyday lives.

From the surgeon’s perspective, the talk offers an honest look at what it takes to build and sustain a career in microsurgery: years of training, unwavering commitment, continuous learning, and the constant pursuit of improvement. Dr. Deleyiannis shares the rewards, challenges, and personal lessons that come with caring for patients undergoing complex, often life-changing procedures.

The talk also explores broader issues affecting the field, including the role of clinical research in advancing microsurgical care, access to specialized reconstructive surgery, and the economic realities of maintaining a career as a microsurgeon.

At its heart, Reflections of a Microvascular Plastic Surgeon is about more than surgical technique. It is about patients, perseverance, innovation, and the human commitment behind the art and science of reconstruction.
