The Penn Libraries is proud to be home to the collections of Philadelphia-born Marian Anderson, a world-renowned recitalist who was also a high-profile figure in the fight for Civil Rights. Best known as an interpreter of art songs and spirituals, Anderson performed in diverse venues throughout her career, from schools and community centers to formal concert stages.
Join us for a panel discussion exploring Marian Anderson’s profound impact and lasting legacy. Hear from Penn Libraries experts how Anderson’s collections enhance our understanding of her life and work, and what we can learn by reviewing the famed singer’s sheet music. Discover how the Libraries’ archives informed a major exhibition at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and a forthcoming American Masters documentary on PBS.
With special introductions from Sandra Grymes, niece of Marian Anderson and former member of the Penn Libraries’ Board of Advisors.
